Stargate SG-1--what a gem!
My wife and I have been catching up on Stargate SG-1. And it's about time considering that the show is over--how typical of me to find out about a great show long after it was over! I did that with Babylon 5 (in truth, I saw the pilot and a few of the first episodes when they first aired back in 1993 or so, but the show skipped to a cable channel I didn't have and, well I sorta lost track of it. Years later a friend of mine lent me his video tapes of all 5 seasons and demanded that I watch it. I had recently married at the time, so my wife and I sat down and really got into the show. But I digress. :-) ).
Another friend of mine happens to have (almost) all of the Stargate SG-1 DVDs (thank God for DVD!) so he's been lending them to us. Oh man oh man, what a show. Now I did see the motion picture, so it was hard for me to get used to Colonel O'Neil not being Kurt Russel and Daniel Jackson not being James Spader. However, it didn't take long. Now I love Richard Dean Anderson's "O'Neil" and Micheal Shanks' "Daniel Jackson"! And it didn't take long for me to really fall in love with Christopher Judge's "Teal'c" and Amanda Tapping's "Samantha Carter." I keep making jokes (greeted with derision from my wife since they are quite old) using Teal'c's voice "Indeed, Daniel Jackson" ad nausem. :-)
Anyway, the show really did sneak up on me. It is not as arc-based as a show like Babylon 5, and it stays fairly episodic, but it does has some over-arching scenarios. The writers will drop the characters into a situation, and they will pick up some artifact, or discover a special race along the way. In later episodes, sometimes in future seasons, they will revisit the artifact or race or whatever, and it will become integral in future episodes. For example, Teal'c's character is struggling against his races' subjugation by the Goa'uld. Then they discover tretonen, and I won't say any more. :-)
Right now, the wife and I are on Season 7 and madly trying to catch up. Seasons 8 and 9 are in shrink wrap! Season 10 is still slated to be purchased by our friend... I don't know what we'll do when we finish with Season 9!
Anyway, so far, so good--we are both loving the show!
